DELGOSEA participates in the 'First Regional Workshop on Local Economic Development'

On 15 – 17 February, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and the Municipal Partners for Economic Development (MPED) together with DELGOSEA’s partners, the National League of Communes/ Sangkat (NLC/S) and the Association of Cities of Vietnam (ACVN) held their First Regional Workshop on Local Economic Development in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

The aim of the workshop was to provide an opportunity for sharing experiences and good practices from the field of local economic development (LED). Strengthening relationships between the different organizations as well as further capacitating Local Government Associations (LGAs) was another goal.

Over 300 delegates from LGAs and central governments came together in Siem Reap, representing eight different countries of Southeast Asia. DELGOSEA’s partner LGAs, the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP), the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP), the League of Provinces of the Philippines (LPP) as well as the Association of Indonesian Municipalities (APEKSI) and ACVN and NLC/S as co-organizers were present.

Activities included drafting actions plans, organizing study trips (to Angkor Wat and the Floating Village) and discussions on Economic Development Practices, how to transfer them successfully as well as networking events. During the plenary session on ‘Learning from Good Practices: Challenges and Opportunities for Local Governments and their Associations’, DELGOSEA Project Manager Susanne Stephan and the National Coordinator for Cambodia, Min Muny, gave a presentation, which was well received by the audience. Of particular interest to the participants was the fact that DELGOSEA had successfully taken a South-South approach, i.e. countries within a region learning from each other.

The two presenters explained the strategic approach towards and the methodology behind transnational best practice replication that DELGOSEA is using, sharing their experiences of working with best practices and pilot cities in Southeast Asia with the audience. Coming together at this workshop was a great opportunity for both, LGAs and DELGOSEA. The partner LGAs of DELGOSEA show a strong commitment to the success of DELGOSEA and are closely involved, not only in the replication process but particularly in sustaining the pilot projects beyond the lifetime of DELGOSEA. The speakers therefore concluded their presentation highlighting DELGOSEA’s strategy for sustainability of best practice replication through close partnership and cooperation with the respective LGAs.

DELGOSEA would like to express its gratitude to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities for creating the opportunity to participate in a great workshop on knowledge. We will definitely stay in touch and look forward to learning more from our Canadian friends.
