Philippines

3 - 7 August 2011. The delegation from Vinh City, consisting of representatives from the city's functional divisions, the Vietnamese project team as well as the project coach, were impressed by a very clean Marikina city - an inspiration to them all. [Cambodian perspective coming soon]

After several months of studying the background to their chosen best practice example and painstakingly drafting the transfer concept, the members of the delegation were excited about finally meeting their counterparts and seeing the eco-saver program in action. Marikina city has developed an ingenious concept, drawing on the cooperation with local schools to help collect recyclable waste, for dealing with the problem of household waste and encourage environmental awareness in the younger generation.

Through intensive talks and fascinating site visits, including to the recycling facility of Marikina, the visitors were able to gain a better understanding of the best practice model as well as to clearly identify some of the problems and challenges awaiting them. The way in which schools were administering an intricate system of rewards for students who brought in garbage for recycling was of particular interest to the delegates. The message came across loud and clear: find the right way of rewarding positive behavior and the whole community can benefit.

All participants agreed that the experience was invaluable; some adjustments to the transfer concept have become necessary, but Vinh City is on the right track!
