Tarakan

Tarakan at a Glance:

Tarakan on the Indonesian island of Borneo is inspired by the eco-savers from Marikina in the Philippines – a simple, but ingenious concept that involves local schools in the collection of recyclable rubbish by enlisting the enthusiasm of students. Currently, the project is being piloted in selected primary and high schools; it is planned, however, to extend the scheme to all 104 schools in Tarakan and its vicinity. All the preparatory activities haven been done, the schools and the community are briefed on their role, the cooperation with second-hand shops and recycling facilities has been secured – the project is well on its way.
