Looking ahead to the next DELGOSEA Meeting

For the first time in 2016, the key DELGOSEA network members will get together for a workshop in Bangkok focusing on decentralisation and the importance of good local governance in ASEAN.

Taking place from 16 – 17 May 2016, the workshop will gather nearly 40 participants from DELGOSEA member organisations as well as observers from Malaysia and Myanmar. Eight out of the ten ASEAN countries will be represented in that way, which shows the network’s increasing appeal across the region.

After having concentrated for most of last year on the topical issue of ASEAN Economic Integration and on best practice exchanges, this upcoming workshop will focus on one of DELGOSEA’s core themes: decentralisation and good local governance. The keynote speech on the importance of local governance in ASEAN, setting the tone for a day of intensive discussions, will be given by Dr Wilfrido V. Villacorta, a former ASEAN Deputy Secretary-General from the Philippines. Debates on the state of decentralisation in ASEAN as well as inclusive economic development on the local level will round of the day.

The event will also provide the opportunity for a meeting of the DELGOSEA General Assembly so that internal administrative issues can be discussed and the work of the National Steering Councils discussed and consolidated. Another internal session will focus on monitoring and evaluating the progress that the different DELGOSEA members have made on the goals that were agreed for 2016.
