Short Memo: Local Government Best Practices for Sustainable Development in a Green Institutional Framework

The Philippine Council for Sustainable Development held a one-day workshop on Asian LGU Best Practices: Green Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development at Santo Tomas University on February 28. Participants were coming from NGOs, local governments as well as selected national government departments involved in the issue of sustainable development in the country.

The seminar workshop was conducted to provide input to the Philippine position in the international conference in Rio 20+  Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 2012. Dr. Gaudioso C. SosmeƱa, Jr., one of the key experts of DELGOSEA was invited to discuss Asian Local Government Units Best Practices in Green Institutional Frameworks for Sustainable Development.

The best practices under the umbrella of DELGOSEA such as the project on low carbon city in Muaklang, Thailand; the Marikina disaster management experience, the preservation of historical relics in Phuket, Thailand as well as the Quang Nam in Vietnam experience on lateral cooperation, preservation of environment were discussed.  High interest among participants was observed when a series of questions were raised regarding the transferability potential of such best practices in Southeast Asia. The outcome of this workshop will serve as input for the final document of the Philippine position in the Rio 20+ Summit.
