Short Memo: Spreading Chiang Rai’s Low Carbon Approach

Thailand

Chiang Rai, one of DELGOSEA’s original pilot cities, which continued with its quest to become a low carbon city even after the end of the project, is becoming a best practice city in its own right.

During a meeting of the National Municipal League of Thailand (NMT) with the Thai Pollution Control Department (PCD) and the German ‘Gesellschaft fuer International Zusammenarbeit’ (GIZ) in September 2014, it was decided that the three organisations will cooperate to organise a regional workshop to promote green purchasing amongst 2484 municipalities throughout the country in 2015.

It was also decided that the low carbon learning centres that were established in Chiang Rai as part of the DELGOSEA project would be promoted by the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP) as a good practice to be shared throughout ASEAN.

Clearly, Chiang Rai’s approach is successful and in demand – on the same day, the mayor of the city, Vijai Amaralikit, was invited by the Office of National and Economic Development (NESDB) to share the concept of a low carbon city and explain the concept of sustainable and low carbon development.
