Description of LGA

The League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) is the umbrella organization of the country’s 1,500 municipalities created in accordance with Section 498 of Republic Act No. 7160, otherwise known as the Local Government Code of 1991. The League shall have the primary purpose of ventilating, articulating and crystallizing issues affecting municipal government administration, and securing through proper and legal means, solutions thereto.

In pursuit of its mandate, LMP serves as an advocate and partner of the national government in formulating policies affecting LGUs, especially municipalities, and in conceptualizing, designing and implementing programs and projects; as an enabler and provider of services; an advocate for public accountability,

transparency and good governance, and other issues affecting municipalities; and a staunch promoter/supporter of local autonomy and decentralization.

LMP undertakes capacity development for the needs of its members, including an orientation for newly-elected mayors; resource mobilization; research and advocacy services; inter-LGU collaboration; and technical and institutional assistance. LMP established a Mayor’s Development Center to serve as the policy, research, training and development arm of the League. LMP holds regular consultation with its members through provincial chapter meetings, island cluster conferences, national executive board meetings, and General Assemblies.

LMP’s target groups are its 1,500 member municipalities, and the municipalities‘ officials and functionaries.
