New Leadership for the DELGOSEA Standing Committee

New Leadership for the DELGOSEA Standing Committee

The DELGOSEA Standing Committee is firmly in female hands after electing Sri Indah Wibi Nastiti from the Indonesian local government association APEKSI as chair and Marisa Lerias from the Philippine League of Municipalities as co-chair during their meeting on 22 July 2014 in Vientiane, Laos.

After only nine months, the DELGOSEA Standing Committee has undergone a change at the top – the previous chair and co-chair, Mr Khajohnkiat Nipatpokai and Yvette Yap, left their positions and had to be replaced. Those two had done an excellent job in directing the activities of DELGOSEA’s over the last year and making sure that the work plan was adhered to. The DELGOSEA network wishes them all the best for their future.

However, the reshuffle means that two representatives of experienced and long-standing DELGOSEA member organisations are in charge. They expressed their delight at the chance to shape the network’s advocacy and capacity building work over the next two years.

The members of the Standing Committee reported about the activities that had taken place in their countries since the last meeting in February: national advocacy plans had been developed further and most countries have already produced drafts of national policy papers on the role of local governance in the upcoming regional integration of ASEAN. DELGOSEA was represented at several events in the region, increasingly gaining recognition as the ASEAN platform for good local governance and regional best practice exchange.

Focusing on planned activities, it was agreed that a capacity building activity for members of local government associations (LGAs) would take place in the last quarter of 2014 with support of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), a partner of UCLG ASPAC. The training will focus on the arrival of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), preparing participants for the changes that will affect them on the local level.

The Standing Committee’s long-term objective is to achieve a better representation of local government both on the national and the ASEAN level. Policy debates and advocacy as well as the expansion of the DELGOSEA network to all ASEAN countries are some of the activities that will help to reach that goal. The Standing Committee is formally a part of UCLG ASPAC.
